Opencanvas collaboration with

who did the sky, cloud, and rainbow trail background. Also, Lightbulb [link] provided some glow effects that Opencanvas cannot do. I was responsible for the characters

This idea originated from my Ponychan thread [link] where I had to draw something with the words, "Lesbians" "Sonic Rainboom" and "Helikat" (helicopter cat) That's why the sky-shipping.

The cat was ruining an otherwise nice picture so I removed it from this final version. The other version can be found on that thread.

If I had not read your description. I would have thought something completely different. Ok well the thumbnail that lead me to look at this gave me the impression of shipping. Then I saw it and their faces. That lead me to think this;

Ok RD looks sad. Like, this is the end, sad.
Twi looks scared and slightly crazed.
When I see them like this. It feels like something terrible has happened. A couple ideas pop in my head.

Dash is the only one that can stop the madness that is now Twi. Twi lost control after a magical experiment went wrong (or some other thing). Her massive amount of magic power caused her mind to snap. She started to do horrible things to other ponies. Even killing. Though cause of the relationship that she and dash had. Dash was able to get close to her. Using her supersonic speed she lifted her high in the sky. Where Twi with the last bit of her free mind says one last thing, "Thank You". Before Dash whips around into a sonic nose dive. Letting go moments before the ground and..... and.... well I guess that's enough. You get the picture.

Another thought was the world below the clouds was destroyed. Covered in lava or who knows what. Dash and Twi are the last ponies. Dash can't stay in the air forever, but at least they are together. Dash is so sad cause her wings are giving out on her. She looks at Twi who is scared to calm her, gazing into her eyes. Twi gives a faint smile as she reaches and holds dash close to her. As her wings stop and they fall past the clouds.

This is an incredible picture. I do not mean to sound depressing. I think it is wonderful and love everything about it. I can see the shipping to it as well, but only after reading your words.

Still, I love this picture so much. Thank you for sharing it and igniting my imagination.
